Lions, and Tigers, and Blacks and Teachers, Oh my!

This week, Tony Dine http :( www.tonydine.blogspot.com ) has posted about teachers being the worst tippers. Moreover, anyone who reads Ribeye’s Blog ( http://www.ragingserver.com/ ) knows he follows the poor tipping habits of blacks.

As  I sit at home watching the Cowboys and the Giants, I have decided to add my two cents…

Teachers

School teachers, as Tony mentions, are bad tippers. Maybe it is their low income, or their lack of respect for people in businesses that do not require a Ph.D. The first time I served teachers, I had a 9 top of high school social studies women come in for lunch. Although the total check for all of the women was $183 (something I would later find out is rare - teachers do not spend much money), they left me a lack-luster $24.00.

I figured I should hope for algebra teachers next time - they could figure out 15 - 20% with far more accuracy.

At a different restaurant, I ran into another large table of teachers. Each ate either soup or salad, and drank only water. The highest tab was $11, the lowest, $5. Each of them tipped in the $0.75 - $1.00 range. They camped at my table for two hours, discussing God knows what - maybe how small and unsatisfying their side salad was - and spent $48. For me - $5.38. Recently, at my current (upscale) job, I had four teachers come in for lunch on one of those staff development holidays. They spent a mere $38.00 (incredibly low in my restaurant, even for lunch. Two of them only ate soup, one only ate soup and salad - How is it that teachers can live on soup, salad, and water with a lemon alone?). Tip: $5.10.

Another thing I have noticed: teachers will always leave you coins. I suppose teaching all of those kids how to add two dimes, a quarter and nine pennies makes them think everyone, not only 7 year olds, appreciate pennies, nickels and dimes.

Teachers spend most of their days bossing around the youth of America. When out at a restaurant, they boss around the working men and women of America, too. I have never seen any group of people spend and eat so little, yet order people around so much. More salt, more lemons, my soup isn’t hot enough, my soup is too hot (all real complaints from teachers)… and so on…

Halfrican - Americans

I like using the name Halfrican-American. I feel if you use a hyphenated name, like Mexican-American, African-American, Italian-American, and so on, you are saying you are only 50% American. Therefore, it’s not uncommon to hear me say “Halfrican-American.”

In my current job, I rarely serve blacks. Because of the neighborhood and price of the food items, let alone the continental - European cuisine and lack of Buffalo wings, or “wangs” as Ribeye calls ‘em, we tend to see a more, well, white clientèle.

Last week, I had a black two top for lunch. The man was ghetto, while the woman was not. Of course, the man paid. Bill: $46.00, Tip: $5.00.

A few nights ago, ghetto man took his ultra-non-ghetto (and very very hot) girlfriend/baby’s mamma to a romantic dinner. Bill $89.00. Tip: $5.36. Gee, thanks.

I have worked with black servers who hate waiting on black tables, and can understand why. I treat everyone the same at the tables and tend to use the three strike rule before you are SOL for good service. The best tip I have ever gotten from a black family (that ran me around like a dog, but I responded quickly and with a smile) is 16%. That’s the best. The other night, the bar tender was stiffed on a $37.00 tab by a black couple. They decided tipping was optional on their four drinks and did not take that option.

I will expand more later, but right now, I have to get back to football.

Teachers can be bad, but I think it may even be isolated to elementary/high school vs. college. I work near a community college, and the professors, etc., we get from there are 15-18%ers generally. A lot of businessmen are patrons, and they’re the worst because they sit and have meetings all afternoon, then tip 13%. Every now and then you can get lucky, but it’s rare…ugh.

Halfrican-American–great! You mind if I steal it??

  2. willworkfortips Says:

    not at all

  3. Tony Says:

You forgot to mention that they ALWAYS want the check split!

  4. willworkfortips Says:

Yes, yes I did — They always want their own check. Is this something they teach at teacher’s college?

  5. ribeye Says:

It’s not ALL blacks, just the entitlement junkies of the bunch. They do always want separate checks, and they bitch about the gratuity on large parties. They think that separate checks solves the gratuity problem, but I hate to tell them if they’re part of a large party, the grat stays, and they’ll pay it as part of the bill.

Oh yes, as an addition to my previous comment, I do not use the terms African American, Mexican American or anything like that. I find it hard to believe that the current black society (immigrants excluded) are actually FROM Africa or Mexico or anywhere else. To say that they’re African-American is to say they came from Africa, and have gained American citizenship, which is utterly false, and is just another way for the Black culture to distance itself from everyone else.

Exactly - part of being american, no matter what color you are, means being American. It’s ok to honor your heritage, but it’s another to let your heritage shield you from opportunity or a sense of community. You are not from Africa, although your ancestry might originate there. You are not from Italy, although your great-grandfather was born there - You are American. My mother is female - does that make me Female-Man? My grandmother has green eyes - mine are brown, does that mean my eye color is Green-Brown? Not at all.

I wish I knew why teachers suck at tipping…for whatever reason, teachers are extremely high maintenance in general - for a while, I used to teach teachers as part of my job, what a fucking nightmare…It is seriously embarrassing for me when teachers tip bad. Thankfully where I work now is sufficiently upscale that non-tippers of all varieties tend not to come in.

I am a teacher by day and waitress by night. I hae seen first hand that this sterotype is true. When my friends go out to eat with me, they have learned that they HAD BETTER tip! We young teachers stick together, and most of us have worked in the restaurant business. Sadly, I have seen former students of older teachers wait on them, and they still leave 10% or less. It is people like this that give teachers a bad name!

[...] Will Work for Tips has a great post up about the various people in the world who don’t tip. Trust me, the list is much longer, but that one covers some of the main people. Teachers who don’t tip because of their bad income, and Hyphenated Americans. Check it out, it’s a great read. [...]

My parents are teachers and every Friday night, they and their friends, mostly teachers and retired teachers, go out to eat. Now, I join them on occasion with my two children. We may seem like one of the worst tables on Earth if you go by sterotypes. But, every single one of those women likes to drink. I usually don’t drink due to the kids and a long drive home. Everyone usually gets a few appetizers and orders decently priced entrees. From what I have seen, gratuity is usually added on due to the size of the party. If we have a good waiter, I know my dad will add an extra tip. I think one of the reasons we might differ from the stereotype is because before my father became a teacher, he owned a restaurant. He knows what it’s like and makes sure to take care of good waiters. I know that there are groups of people who usually don’t tip well, but please remember that for every group like that out there, there are the ones who don’t behave like that also.

  12. Joy Says:

Not all teachers are bad tippers. I tip at least 20% when I go out to eat, but I always go to the same places, get the same waiters/waitresses and get excellent service. I can count the number of times I have been uhappy with my service on one hand. And on each of those occasions- the resteraunt comped part of the bill or did something to make up for it.

I have to agree about the hyphenated crap. Black, white, red or green- If you were born here, you are an American. Get over yourself.

  13. willworkfortips Says:

Joy - even if you were not born here, and you are a US citizen, you are an American.

Black people are horrible tippers.. its always 5$. On a 30$ check expect 5$ on a 50 $ check expect 5$.. and thats IF YOU ARE LUCKY!!
ALSO, Foreigners.. are the WORST.. tipping an average of 10-15% of their bill. Beacuse in Europe they dont tip like the U.S. In europe the servers get paid a salary and dont rely on tips like we do here in the United States. So I say, if you can’t adapt to our customs stay the hell home!
People need to realize that waitors/waitresses make NOTHING 2.50$ AN HOUR and rely on 20% tips. So unless your server is HORRIBLE u shouldnt tip less than 20%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. Kd Says:

Teachers are pretty cheap when it comes to tips and they split their checks which is always a pain!

I can’t say that all black people are bad tippers. I’ve gotten some pretty good tips, usually from younger black guys eating alone or with friends. However, a guy with a girl will not tip that well at all.

I’ve waited on alot of foreigners too. The best tippers are from England, Germany, and Australia. The worst are the French. In fact, I was once told by a French family that they do not tip Americans!

Other cheapies I’ve experienced are cops, athletes, and Mexicans.
